Plans for October

If you've read my blog for a while, you'll know my weightloss journey is a long and rambling one, with some dark and dreary detours and some big mountains to climb - I generally get myself back from the detour onto the right path, and sometimes I even crest those mountains and joyfully move forward, but in the whole, I'm making quite a meal of it. (To coin a phrase.) For me, you'll have realised, it's all in my head. Everything. And I'm working hard at that aspect, believe me I am, it's just a slower process than I'd have ever imagined. Every step forward is one to be celebrated - but I can't allow the backward steps to derail me any more. I have to keep moving forward: so here I'm putting down a few gentle plans, to make myself a wee bit more accountable and make sure I focus on going the 'right' way. But don't worry, it's nothing major, as I have a history of setting big goals and then getting completely overwhelmed by them and ending up doing nothing!! No, really, it's just to prod myself into being genuinely a lot more active as we head into winter. So...

Gym: I definitely intend on going to the gym regularly. I've recently started building back up a bit of confidence with the lifting again, and I want to continue that. Also, kettlebells are awesome. I want to keep a good varied mix of weights, core work, and cardio, and just get into some good routines again. When I used to be a member of a Virgin gym, it was great to get an early morning workout then have breakfast in the cafe and read a chapter of whatever book I was currently devouring, before heading across town to work, but now I go to PureGym, which don't have cafes, so I can't just try and fall back into old routines; new ones need to be formed. That's fine, though, habits are formed through consistency, and that's my plan for this month and onward through the rest of winter. Get into a regular habit, but mix up the actual workouts to keep things varied and interesting, and track improvements.

Running: Errr, yeah, so I guess I'd better start doing some of that, again. I have some vague ideas forming for 2015's running goals, but I'm not confident enough with them to put them into writing yet. I just need to actually DO some running first! I felt pretty low about missing the Clyde Stride this year, when I originally agreed to be on a relay team, I had all these huge intentions for all the training I was going to do, etc. but emotionally speaking I've had a really difficult time over the last 12 months, and I hadn't appreciated how much it would knock me back. My confidence was never exactly huge with running, but I was making improvements, hitting PBs, and starting to (shhhhhh, don't tell anyone) not hate it, and over the last 12 months, that just disappeared. I allowed that to disappear. Also to an extent, I allowed people to disappear, and my slowly-growing confidence went with them. The 30 minute challenge I did in July is something I should have definitely done more to capitalise on, it's just timing and work issues got in the way there, and I allowed them to. I have to take responsibility for my own decisions; a busy work schedule didn't stop me from running, I chose to let it do so. So, yes, running - I need to be doing that. I'm not setting any running goals for October, other than "doing some running". Nothing major, just getting my trainers laced up and my arse out the door.

Food: The biggest area I need to do something about. I know exactly what I'm doing when I'm eating 'poorly', I just have to find the right way to stop myself from doing it. It's a mental game, rather than anything else. I think preparation is going to be the absolute key here - have healthy food prepared in advance, at hand for easy access when I want something quick and without effort. And definitely take lunch into work. One of my very worst habits is allowing a busy, distracted mind and long day at work to dictate my lunchtime decisions in the canteen. If I take food in with me, that problem mostly disappears - and while I'm great at taking a filling healthy lunch into work on the occasional day here and there, once again, I have zero consistency there. So, October will be about trying to build up better habits with food prep in advance, but especially lunches.
