This little lady on the left joined my growing family yesterday. :-) Means that as well as the 16kg bell, I now have a pair of 9's to do lunges and two-handed squats, as well as things like two-hand clean and press, although at the moment the shoulder press aspect is a little heavy for me. When a weight is a tiny bit heavy to shoulder press from a standing position, a 'push press' works wonders: you just squat down a tiny way (like, half a squat, not even that) then power upwards to sue the momentum of your bodyweight to assist the shoulder press. I have to figure out as many exercises as I can safely do in my flat without bothering the guys in the flat below me (I live on the second floor and have laminate flooring - so jumping or heaving footfalls like from high step-ups are out of the question). I tried to do my first ever Bosu-seated Russian twist with my 9kg kettlebell the other morning, and I ended up rolling off the Bosu spreadeagled, face planted against the floor and legs akimbo. Not very dignified!!!Yesterday I went to the gym after work, as it was too warm outside (even at 7pm) to have a run - plus my hayfever is really acting up this year. It's been a very long time since I tried any real speedwork on the treadmill, but I've been analysing my old training diaries and in 2012 when I was improving my 5km running consistently, I was also doing the 1km time trial on the treadmill rather frequently, my best ever time being 5:53. Last night, I managed 6:53, and gosh it was a struggle!!! I'm pleased I dipped under 7 minutes, but losing a whole minute off my 1km time is disappointing. I've decided to incorporate the 1km time trial into my gym sessions much more regularly, with a view to dropping my time quite significantly. I did some other cardio stuff in the gym, and some stretches and PowerPlate stretches, then walked home. A decent day, but I think I'd eaten too much during the day, as I was overly worried about being properly fuelled for a late post-work workout, and I basically grazed right through from midday through to about 4pm! I don't do a lot of early evening exercise, normally choosing early morning, and as soon as I get out of routines, I panic! I survived the session well, though, so next time I'll sort my food intake out better, so as to be sufficiently fuelled, but not stuffed full of junk!!
Feeling positive!! Today I'm out of the office all day, working in a different location that I've had to drive an hour to get to: the pedometer is going to take a massive hit today, but I should make it home by about 6:30pm, so maybe I'll have enough energy for a swim, or evening walk, by then. There is always a way, when you're committeed and motivated enough! (I hope...)
