Ups and downs, it's all about the ups and downs... That's how weightloss goes, really; especially when there's a lot of it to do. I think I'm back up to what I weighed at the beginning of the year now, and it's all down to the rubbish I'm eating.
I've made a conscious effort the last few days to eat better, but I have to be honest with myself; I've not done very well. I've been taking the lazy route, and making poor choices. This has to change - so from here I'm going back to keeping a food diary. *nods*
So - you're kinda lucky I'm writing this entry today, instead of sometime last week. Tonight I'm on a bit of a high, after going out to run a 10km training run with a bunch of 'proper' runners. Of course they quickly disappeared, but I ran with Tamara, who's at a similar level to me, and with Davie who had organised the run and was looking after us, making sure we didn't get lost. *grin* Did I mention it was in Glasgow? Yeah, I can count the number of times I've been there on my fingers, really - wouldn't even need to take my socks off. I could get lost after just turning down one street, I'm sure.
The point of the run was an easy familiarisation run for a 10k race I'm signed up for, in 3 weeks time. I was really worried, having not ran this far since October (when I ran it pretty slowly) and not being exactly the best runner ever, but I decided to go for a run/walk rhythm right from the outset, and thankfully Tamara seemed in agreement with that strategy.
I've come to realise that the further I try to run without adding in a walk break, the quicker my brain leaps in with how utterly horrendous the whole running thing is. I definitely need to work on that. Today, though, I kept a steady pace running for maybe 800m, then walked for about 200m, before running again.... Obviously in some parts I walked a bit further - you know, like going up hill, haha.
I felt quite 'comfortable' (I hesitate to use that word in its fullest sense - I mean, I was running, for crying out loud!!) and content with the pace. I ended the 10km run just a few minutes faster than the last time (only time!) I tried the distance, but safe in the knowledge I'll do better on the actual race day.
And it's THAT last revelation that's making me so happy tonight. I definitely know I'm going to do better in three weeks' time, and I know that from how I felt during the run, how my breathing was, how I managed the whole 10km without needing to carry water, and from how my legs feel now, several hours later. Plus, my splits for 2km sections were 14:52, 15:40, 15:50, 18:07 (hill!), and 14:29 - so I finished strong (it hurt in the last bit, but I was conscious I was actually pushing myself over the last 1km) and know I had more in me.
It feels quite good now, looking back... and totally different to how I feel after pretty much every run I do. Admittedly, this was a slightly slower pace than I tend to do, but it speaks volumes. Hey, I might be able to stick with this whole 'running' thing, after all..... ;)
In other news, the training for the Edinburgh Moonwalk marathon is going well. Walked almost a half-marathon yesterday, and other than tight calves in the last mile or two, I felt fine. Just gotta keep up the good work. (And stop eating so much rubbish.) Happy Sarah. :)
And yes, I know I still have to do something to make this blog look better, and start including pictures and links etc. I will, I promise. x
